Missouri Chamber joining for Manufacturing Day 2017 on Thursday

JEFFERSON CITY — Dozens of Missouri factories will open their doors on Oct. 6 as part of a nationwide event showcasing modern manufacturing and encouraging more people to consider manufacturing as a career.

Manufacturing Day is a program of the National Association of Manufacturers and was started in 2012. Last year, 595,341 people participated in Manufacturing Day nationwide, including 267,607 students. A survey of those students showed that the program has a powerful impact. Nearly 90 percent of the students who attended an event said they became more aware of manufacturing jobs in their communities and 64 percent said they the experience left them more motivated to pursue a manufacturing career.

“Businesses across Missouri tell us that workforce is a major issue — that it’s increasingly difficult to find the employees they need for the jobs they have. This problem is especially pronounced in manufacturing, where outdated stereotypes about factory work help to drive people away from today’s good paying, high-tech production jobs,” said Daniel P. Mehan, Missouri Chamber president and CEO. “We are proud to lead Manufacturing Day in Missouri because we know it makes a real difference. I encourage Missourians to attend the events in their communities and help celebrate the importance of manufacturing in our economy.”

Staff from the Missouri Chamber will be in communities across the state participating in Manufacturing Day events, including events in: Carthage, Chillicothe, Ferguson, Fulton, Hillsboro, Kansas City, Joplin, Mexico, Perryville, Poplar Bluff, Springfield, St. Joseph, St. Louis, Troy, Warrensburg and Wentzville. Manufacturing Day is part of the Missouri Chamber’s work as the state affiliate for the national Dream it. Do it. program.
