Hawley releases first TV ad, McCaskill fires back

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The race for Missouri’s U.S. Senate seat is heating up even more, with Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley releasing his first TV ad against incumbent Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill.

Hawley’s advertisement, titled “At the Court”, touted his experience as a former Supreme Court clerk, as well as his work as an attorney and member of the U.S. Supreme Court Bar, while comparing it to McCaskill’s record.

The ad comes on the day that President Donald Trump is expected to announce his pick to replace U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy.

“The Supreme Court is a pivotal issue in this race. I know the importance of the Court because I’ve worked there. I’ve litigated there,” said Josh Hawley about the ad. “Missourians want a justice who will faithfully follow the law the people wrote. Claire McCaskill has endorsed activist liberals every time. She needs to finally make a break with Chuck Schumer and represent the people of Missouri.”

McCaskill’s campaign responded to the ad, saying that the facts tell a different story. They said that McCaskill has voted for “over 70 percent” of President Donald Trump’s judicial nominees and said that Trump has signed more than 25 bills that McCaskill has sponsored or aided.

“Josh Hawley is suing to strip protections for nearly 2.5 million Missourians with pre-existing conditions and has continued to back tariffs that are costing Missouri jobs,” a press release from the McCaskill camp read.

“Josh Hawley can try to mislead Missouri voters all he wants, but that won’t change Claire’s clear record of working across the aisle to get things done for Missourians,” said McCaskill for Missouri Press Secretary Eric Mee. “Hawley talks a lot about Missouri’s way of life, but his actions tell a different story. Instead of standing up for hard-working Missourians, Hawley is actively working to strip protections for people with pre-existing conditions, and he supports the tariffs that are slamming Missouri farmers and manufacturers. Josh Hawley continues to stand with health insurance companies and against Missouri farmers and manufacturers. Claire will never stop fighting for Missouri families.”
