Lawmakers Will Help Feed the Hungry with Annual Campaign Against Hunger Event

ST. LOUIS – Legislators and staff from Missouri and other Southern states will package more than 50,000 meals for the St. Louis Area Foodbank as part of the Southern Legislative Conference’s (SLC) Campaign Against Hunger event. The event, which is part of SLC’s annual convention being held in St. Louis, will take place Sunday, July 22 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis at The Arch located at 315 Chestnut St. in St. Louis.

The Campaign Against Hunger event was started in 2011 by Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, who was chair of SLC at the time. Since then, SLC has sponsored food-packaging events at each of its annual meetings in an effort to provide food to the hungry, and to bring legislators from its member states together with members of the local communities. The event is organized in conjunction with The Outreach Program, a non-profit 501(c)(3) based in Iowa that organizes similar events around the country, and has helped to package more than 354 million meals to date.

This year’s event is spearheaded by Missouri Senate President Pro Tem Ron Richard, who serves as the current chair of SLC. In addition to the food packaging efforts, Richard will make three $2,500 donations on behalf of SLC to the St. Louis Area Food Bank, Team Food Pantry and the Harvey Kornblum Food Pantry.

“This community service project is reflective of the SLC annual meeting, where legislators from our 15-state region work side by side, regardless of party or affiliation, to address the pressing issues facing their citizens,” said Senate President Pro Tem Richard. “This donation of 50,000 meals is our way of thanking the people of St. Louis for sharing their wonderful city with us.”
