Herschend appointment withdrawn, Senate expects Parson to appoint him again

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Senate on Friday took up Gov. Mike Parson’s appointments and approved all of them but one: Peter Herschend, who had been appointed to the State Board of Education.

After it became clear that Sen. Jamilah Nasheed wanted an individual vote on Herschend, the Senate stood at ease, leading to Parson’s eventual withdrawal of Herschend.

After adjournment, Senate President Pro Tem Ron Richard, R-Joplin, and State Sen. David Sater, R-Cassville, issued the following joint statement regarding the withdrawal of Peter Herschend’s appointment from the State Board of Education.

“Peter Herschend is a strong and dedicated champion of quality education in this state. The withdrawal of Mr. Herschend’s appointment to the State Board of Education today is not based on his ability or qualifications to serve on the board but is based on the objections of one senator. We expect the governor to reappoint Mr. Herschend to the board soon and for the Senate to again consider his confirmation early in the next legislative session.”
