AARP Missouri endorses Amendment 1

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – AARP Missouri is adding their endorsement to the growing list of supporters for Missouri’s Ballot Amendment 1, better known as “Clean Missouri.”

“Americans 50 and older are the nation’s most powerful voting bloc,” said AARP Missouri Advocacy Director Jay Hardenbrook. “But even their voices are being drowned out by powerful interests trying to buy Missouri politics.”

AARP Missouri serves a membership of over 750,000 in the state of Missouri and over 38 million nationwide, with that membership spanning the political spectrum with about one-third of their membership identifying as progressive or liberal, another third as conservative and the last third as independent.

“Amendment 1 checks a lot of the boxes for us,” AARP Missouri State Director Craig Eichelman said, “Whether it’s stopping gerrymandering of Missouri districts, preventing lobbyist gifts from buying votes in Jefferson City or limiting the amount of influence wealthy donors can buy in elections, Amendment 1 will restore the voice to regular Missourians trying to access their elected officials.”

“No matter whom you vote for,” Hardenbrook said, “Missourians agree that getting elected doesn’t guarantee you gifts from lobbyists or protection from your constituents voting you out of office when they see you aren’t protecting their interests.”

AARP Missouri’s support of Amendment 1 is now a part of AARP’s “Be the Difference. Vote” campaign designed to encourage older Americans to make their voices heard at the ballot box this fall.
