JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – State Rep. Bryan Spencer, R-Wentzville, has been recognized for his continued support of Missouri’s community colleges.
Spencer is one of the legislators named as recipients of the 2018 Distinguished Legislator Award presented by the Missouri Community College Association, which was presented during the association’s 54th Annual Convention and Trade Show at the Hilton Branson Convention Center on Thursday, Nov. 8.
Spencer was nominated for the award in recognition of his continued support of community colleges and higher education in Missouri. The association specifically acknowledged his work to help open up a technical community college in the Wentzville, Warren County area. Because of Spencer’s efforts, St. Charles County, along with Warren County Community College, will be opening up a technical school in the Warren County area, with the groundbreaking on the new technical college taking place in October.
Spencer was also recognized for his work as the House handler of SB 603, and his work on the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education.
SB 603, signed into law on June 1, 2018, creates the Missouri Course Access Program, expanding online school offerings to all K-12 students in the state, building upon the Missouri Virtual Instruction Program that was first established in 2017. Spencer had worked on the legislation for six years before it finally was signed into law, saying that the changes would make the education system “more equitable and more accessible” while also giving young people access to the tools they need to succeed in their educational pursuits.
The Missouri Community College Association represents the state’s 12 community colleges and works to advocate for their interests in the State Capitol.
