JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The funding of Josh Hawley’s successful U.S. Senate campaign is now under scrutiny following the filing of a complaint.
Missouri’s Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft is investigating a complaint against Missouri’s Attorney General Josh Hawley that alleges he used public funds in his bid for the U.S. Senate.
The American Democracy Legal Fund requested on November 2, 2018 that the Secretary of State’s Office “commence an investigation against Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley” based upon allegations that “strongly suggest[] that Hawley used public funds as Attorney General to support his candidacy for the U.S. Senate.”
On Thursday, the Secretary of State’s Office sent a letter to the ADLF stating they will “commence an investigation into the alleged offense.” The Secretary of State’s Office is requesting ADLF provide any documents, such as the emails cited in the news article or first-hand knowledge, relating to the allegation.
“Josh Hawley’s flagrant abuse of his taxpayer funded office for his own political gain deserves immediate investigation,” said ADLF President Brad Woodhouse. “We’re heartened to see Secretary of State Ashcroft give this racket further scrutiny.”
