Parson appoints Ransom to succeed Van Amburg on eastern court of appeals

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — A St. Louis City Judge has been chosen to fill the vacancy on the state’s eastern court of appeals.

On Wednesday, Gov. Mike Parson appointed Judge Robin Ransom to the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District. She will succeed Judge Lisa S. Van Amburg, who retired in August.

Ransom was one of three names under consideration for the post. The Appellate Judicial Commission put forth Michael E. Gardner, Ransom, and John P. Torbitzky for the post in late December following an application and interview process.

A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Ransom earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Sociology from Douglass Residential College – Rutgers University in 1988. She graduated Juris Doctor from the University of Missouri School of Law in May 1991.

After graduating from law school, Ransom worked for the St. Louis County Public Defender’s Office, the St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the St. Louis County Family Court-Juvenile Division before being appointed Family Court Commissioner for the St. Louis County Family Court in 2002. She was appointed to the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court in 2008. In 2018, Ransom was elected the first female African-American as the presiding judge for the 22nd Judicial Circuit.

Ransom is a member of the Missouri State Foster Care and Adoption Board and the Juvenile Officer Performance Standards Work Group. She also serves as a mentor for The Literacy Project.
