JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — State Auditor Nicole Galloway has begun a regularly scheduled audit of Pemiscot County, located in southeast Missouri. The most recent audit of Pemiscot County was issued in December 2015, with the county receiving an overall rating of poor. A follow-up report on county operations was released in June 2016 to determine if selected audit recommendations had been implemented.
“One of the purposes of an audit is to help elected and appointed officials take steps to serve their constituents more effectively and efficiently,” Auditor Galloway said. “As my office begins this audit, it is my hope that county officials have moved forward to implement more of the recommendations from the previous audit. If citizens have information that would be helpful to our audit, I encourage them to contact my office through the Whistleblower Hotline.”
The 2015 audit identified several county funds that were in poor financial condition, including the General Revenue Fund. During the follow-up review, auditors found that county officials were working to strengthen the county’s financial position by increased monitoring, but continued to approve a deficit budget for the General Revenue Fund.
The audit raised additional concerns about accounting controls and procedures in offices of the Sheriff, County Assessor and Public Administrator, and county property tax procedures. The follow-up review determined that some of the recommendations were implemented.
