Galloway launches audit of Knox County Sheriff’s Office

Press release

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri State Auditor Nicole Galloway has launched an audit of the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. The audit follows the resignation of former Sheriff Robert M. Becker, who stepped down after pleading guilty in December 2018 to misdemeanor counts of domestic assault and sexual abuse. Knox County is located in northeast Missouri.

The audit was initiated at the request of the Knox County Commission. The current County Sheriff, Allen Gudehus, was appointed by the Commission and later won a special election in February.

“Audits can help restore public confidence, and I appreciate the Commission asking my office to take this step,” Auditor Galloway said. “As we move forward, I encourage anyone with information that could be helpful to contact our Whistleblower Hotline.”

Individuals who would like to provide information for consideration in this or any audit may contact the State Auditor’s Whistleblower Hotline at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or by calling 800-347-8597. Concerns may also be submitted anonymously online at auditor.mo.gov/hotline.
