Josh Hurlbert launches 2020 bid to represent Smithville in Missouri House

SMITHVILLE, Mo. — A familiar figure to many in Smithville and those in Clay County politics is making another bid to represent his community in the Missouri House.

Josh Hurlbert, a Republican currently serving as a Smithville Alderman, is looking to replace term-limited Rep. Ken Wilson in HD 12. Hurlbert launched an unsuccess bid against Wilson for the seat in 2012 — though this time he has the backing of Wilson.

“Over the years, I’ve watched Josh grow as a man of faith who serves both his family and his community unreservedly,” said Wilson. “I’m proud to support him and look forward to seeing him serve the district in Jefferson City.”

“I want Missouri to be a great place to live, open a business, and a place where every child has the opportunity to go out and pursue their dreams,” Hurlbert said.

He noted he wants to improve Missouri’s transportation infrastructure and help small businesses. Hurlbert also has an interest in tort reform, upholding the second amendment, state spending, and maintain low taxes for citizens.

“As the father of two small children, I want them to grow up with the same opportunities I had. I want them to enjoy the freedom that a small government provides,” Hurlbert said. “I know I don’t have all the answers. I look forward to getting to know the people of this district better and hearing their ideas about how to make Missouri a better place to live.”

Hurlbert grew up in Kearney before settling in Smithville in 2007. After graduating from Park University, Hurlbert began working for U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, where he continues to serve as the field representative manager. Hurlbert was first elected to the Smithville Board of Aldermen in 2018 and is also the past president of the Smithville Rotary Club, where he has been a member since 2011. Additionally, Hurlbert serves as an elder at Desperation Church in Liberty.

His faith, family, and commitment to public service are motivating factors to his candidacy, Hulbert noted. He said he wants to be the voice of his community on a state level and promised to represent them with “dignity and responsibility.”
