Gregory withdraws floor leader bid, endorses Plocher

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — In the race to become the next floor leader in the Missouri House, Rep. David Gregory is forgoing a bid himself to instead back Dean Plocher.

Gregory endorsed Plocher Thursday morning, pointing to his fellow sophomore’s “strong leadership qualities” and “champion conservative values and principles.” Both lawmakers represent portions of St. Louis County.

Aside from Plocher, the race for floor leader includes Reps. Chuck Basye, J. Eggleston, and Curtis Trent. Rep. Allen Andrew is also considering entering the race.

“I am grateful to my family, supporters and friends in the House who encouraged and supported my race for Floor Leader. With my responsibilities to my district, a rapidly growing law practice and my wedding around the corner, I believe I can best serve my district and our Republican Caucus in other significant ways,” Gregory said in a statement.

“I have had the privilege of serving in the House with Rep. Plocher for the past four years. Rep. Plocher has demonstrated integrity and great statesmanship while chairing the General Laws committee. He is a hardworking legislator who possess the right leadership skills to move our caucus agenda forward,” he continued. “Without hesitation, he is my choice to represent and support our caucus as Majority Floor Leader.”

Plocher was first elected to the House in a 2015 special election. He manages his own law firm and previously served as a municipal judge in the 21st Judicial Circuit and as a prosecuting attorney. Prior to becoming a lawyer, he worked in the financial management industry.

“I am grateful for the endorsement from Rep. Gregory, who I have proudly served with in the House. He is strong and effective legislator and a great friend,” Plocher said in a statement. “Rep. Gregory has a great future ahead of him in service to our state. I look forward to working closely with Rep. Gregory throughout our service in the House and in the years ahead.”
