The Missouri Ethics Commission (MEC) found Sen. Jamilah Nasheed failed to report a few campaign donations, totaling $2,500, in a “timely manner” and levied a fine on the Democratic senator.
Three contributions were flagged by the MEC. The donations — all from July 2018 — included $500 from MO Dental PAC, $1,000 from MBA Gateway Region PAC, and $1,000 from MADA Dealers Interested in Government.
The commission imposed a $2,500 fine on Nasheed but lowered it to $250 if paid within 45 days of the order and does not violate campaign finance laws further in the next two years.
Nasheed’s statewide office committee, Citizens to Elect Jamilah Nasheed, was named in the MEC complaint as well. It began in 2005 and is active for a statewide office campaign.
Nasheed said the mistake stemmed from a “clerical error” and was not done intentionally.
“After 14 years of filing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of reports, this is the first time I’ve ever been fined,” Nasheed told The Missouri Times. “It’s something that will never happen again.”
Nasheed signed the agreement with the MEC filed on Aug. 28. She is term-limited and cannot run for state Senate again in 2020.
