JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — More than 13,000 people were added to the civilian labor force in Missouri in the last month, according to the August jobs report.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate also narrowly fell from 3.3 percent to 3.2 percent — making the 37th consecutive month it has been lower than the federal level. And over the past year, Missouri added more than 29,000 jobs.
The Missouri Department of Economic Development includes seasonally adjusted labor statistics in its jobs report to eliminate “influences of predictable seasonal patterns” over monthly changes.
Missouri added more than 77,000 jobs not seasonally adjusted since August 2018.
At the federal level, 130,000 nonfarm jobs were added in August. Unemployment remained steady at 3.7 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Missouri mirrored many themes seen among job growth at the federal level.
Federal jobs saw the greatest growth in Missouri over the past year: from 54,800 to 57,400. Health care and social assistance; professional, scientific, and technical services; and management of companies also saw significant growth over the past year.
Mining and logging and real estate and rental/leasing saw the greatest percentage drops in employment over the past year.
At the federal level, employment in government jobs also rose over the past year — which the U.S. Department of Labor attributed to the hiring of temporary workers for the 2020 Census. Job growth was also seen in the health care and financial activities fields.
However, the mining industry also lost jobs across the U.S., not just in Missouri.
