Local attorney and prior Cole County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Todd Smith has announced his candidacy for Cole County Associate Circuit Judge. Smith is running for the newly-created second associate position which has no incumbent.
“As someone who has worked his whole career in law and successfully argued a case in front of the Missouri Supreme Court, I have come to understand and appreciate Missouri’s legal system. Our system of laws and courts are some of the best in the country and I will strive to make sure that law and order is upheld in Cole County.”
Smith grew up in Missouri. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Missouri, his Juris Doctorate from Drake University Law School, and his Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Law & Government from American University’s Washington College of Law. Smith also holds certificates in constitutional law and civil rights.
Smith has held a variety of jobs in his time practicing law in Missouri. First, he was a Missouri Assistant Attorney General, where he handled felony appeals in the Criminal Division. After leaving that office, Smith worked at the insurance defense firm of Ford, Parshall & Baker in Columbia. While there, he helped argue a week-long civil jury trial to a defense verdict. Next, Smith worked as a Cole County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney where he primarily handled drug offenses.
Most recently, Smith works at his own solo firm as a general practitioner with an emphasis on civil litigation. He is a frequent lecturer to law enforcement agencies on various topics.
“My life experiences have prepared me to sit as a judge in Missouri’s capital,” said Smith. “My education was in Missouri, my career is in Missouri, my practice is right here in Cole County. I have lived and worked here for years, and I want to ensure that the laws are equitably enforced for all citizens and that the people’s constitutional rights are protected at all costs. I will work for justice and fairness in the court system with courage, honesty, and integrity.”
