Doorman Profile: Senate Doorkeep Marty Drewel

JEFFERSON CITY Mo – Upon entering the ranks of the Senate Doorkeepers last session Marty Drewel had the distinct advantage of working for 30 years in state government, more specifically working in the Capitol.

Drewel is a Jefferson City native and attended high school in Jefferson City, and later went on to pursue a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Lincoln University.  Drewel would also go on to receive a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Missouri in Columbia.

Drewel’s experience at the Capitol began when he was a freshman in high school.

“I started in the division of accounting,” he said. “Thats where we did all the state checks and thats where we did all the files.”

In the mid ’90s, he joined the Senate appropriations staff, and would go on to become the staff director of appropriations.  Following his time as director, Drewel went on to join the division of budget and planning.  In his spare time Drewel would go up to the galleries and watch state legislators.

“I just think the capitol is a great place to work, I just love working here,” Drewel said.

Regarding his current position Drewel said, “When I retired last year the opportunity presented itself, I enjoy working in the Capitol, especially working in the Senate and it lets me do that.”

Moving forward Drewel is not sure how long he plans to stay on as a doorkeeper for the Senate.

“We’ve got door-keeps that have been here for several years, a couple of them are in their eighties, I don’t see myself being here that long, but I didn’t picture myself working in state government for 30 years,” Drewel said.
