JEFFERSON CITY, Mo – Upon finishing his studies at the University of Missouri-Columbia, Pat Mulcahy says that he “stumbled” his way into his current position as legislative assistant for Rep. Bob Burns, D-St. Louis. Although he majored in political science and history, he was working in the customer service field after graduation.
“I just always knew I wanted to get involved in politics some how, I don’t even know how I got involved” Mulcahy said.
No matter how he found himself where he is today, Mulcahy is enthusiastic about his current position and working with Burns.
“He’s a mentor and a friend before he’s a boss and he’s really shown me the ropes and introduced me to people in the labor movement – I really appreciate that,” Mulcahy said. “He’s been great to work for.”
When it comes to issues that are important to Mulcahy, labor is one that stands out.
“I come from a pretty big union family, a lot of my family are union electricians,” he said. “I am from Florissant and its a pretty big union area. When I go back home, every one supports labor and that’s what I try to do here.”
Going forward, Mulcahy would like to get more involved in campaign efforts and most recently worked on the campaign of Sen. Gina Walsh, D-St. Louis County.
Eventually, Mulcahy would like to go back home to Florissant as a politician himself.
“For the time being I like working for politicians, but some day I might want to run myself back home in Florissant,” Mulcahy said.
