–guide focuses on protecting service members from consumer fraud and scams–
Jefferson City, Mo. – Attorney General Chris Koster today announced a new consumer guide for military personnel and veterans to offer information regarding laws that protect them from consumer scams and provide tools to help them if they become victims of scams. Topics in the guide include predatory lending, education fraud, residential rental scams, and identity theft.
“The Missouri Attorney General’s Office is committed to protecting those who protect us,” Koster said. “Unfortunately, scam artists often target members of the military and their families because of the extraordinary demands that military service can place on them, both domestically and overseas. My goal is to help these brave men and women identify potential scams before they become a victim and to provide them with information regarding what to do and who to contact if they are scammed.”
The 34-page guide can be downloaded from the Attorney General’s website. In addition, individuals can request the printed publication from the Attorney General’s Office online or at 800-392-8222.
Koster said all current and former military personnel are encouraged to contact the Attorney General’s Office Consumer Hotline at 800-392-8222 or online at ago.mo.gov to report scams or file a consumer complaint.
