JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s Republican junior Senator Roy Blunt continues to push the Senate and fight to change Democrats’ minds regarding Obama’s executive order on immigration.
He is co-sponsoring a bill introduced by U.S. Senator Ron Johnson (Wis.) to block funding for president Obama’s actions regarding to immigration. The bill prohibits the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) or any other federal agency from using funds or fees made available to them to “implement, administer, enforce, or carry out” any amnesty policies established through executive orders. The bill also bars undocumented immigrants that have been granted deferred action from gaining work authorization.
“This is an important fight to have,” said Blunt. “I think we should persuade at least half a dozen democrats that they should join us to get this done.”
Blunt reported that Obama has admitted on 20 different occasions that he does not have the authority to take the executive action that he announced in November. Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn have teamed up with Blunt against Obama’s actions. Senator Cruz even went as far to call President Obama’s actions unconstitutional, which Blunt supported. He encouraged conservative voters to get in touch with the white house and express their opinions on Obama’s actions.
“Sometimes you don’t know how these legislative battles go if you don’t have them, and we intend to have this one,” said Blunt.
Several lawmakers, however, believe that Senator Blunt’s stance is more extreme than theirs.
“I think the Senator’s statements on immigration are far more conservative than how mainstream Missourians feel,” LaFaver said.
