Galloway to audit Missouri General Assembly

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Missouri’s new Auditor Nicole Galloway announced today that her office would begin regularly scheduled audits of the Missouri General Assembly.

Galloway said in a release that the audit would include the Missouri House of Representatives and the Missouri Senate, as well as their supporting functions. The last time both chambers were audited was in 2013.

Audit findings for the House were issued for operating policies and procedures, contingency planning and personnel policies. In the Senate, findings were issued “related to the Senate Administrator’s Fund, operating policies and procedures, National Conference of State Legislatures’ report recommendations and contingency planning.”

It marks an interesting dynamic. Galloway, a Democrat, was appointed to the auditor post after the tragic suicide of Tom Schweich last spring. Schweich, a Republican, was unchallenged in his most recent election. Galloway, a political upstart, is now tasked with auditing a legislature dominated by the opposing political party.

Both chambers were rated as “good” overall in their 2013 audits. Individuals who would like to provide information for consideration during the audit are directed to contact the State Auditor’s office at moaudit@auditor.mo.gov or 800-347-8597.
