Kander awards grants to Daniel Boone library, Columbia schools

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Secretary of State Jason Kander announced Monday that the Columbia Public Schools and Daniel Boone Regional Library system would receive nearly $33,000 in grants.

Columbia Public Schools will receive $9,957 to expand upon a personalized digital reading program for families with pre-kindergarten students.

“This grant will help Columbia Public Schools encourage childhood literacy for Missouri families,” Kander said in a statement. “I’m pleased my office is able to increase learning resources that help strengthen Missouri’s already outstanding libraries.”

The other $23,000 will go to the Daniel Boone Regional Libraries system to replace its Library-to-Go locker systems in its Holts Summit and Hallsville locations. The Library-to-Go program started as a way for the library to expand into Holts Summit and Hallsville and allows patrons to pick up requested media without needed to travel all the way to the closest brick-and-mortar locations. The equipment needed to continue the program is no longer supported by the manufacturer.

The money comes entirely out of federal funding through the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services. Kander has handed out $1.6 million in federal cash in the fiscal year 2015.
