PR Josh Hawley: Senator Schaefer Playing Politics with Abortion

Hawley Releases Recommendations to Hold Planned Parenthood Accountable

In July, Senator Kurt Schaefer and his committee were given authority to hold Planned Parenthood accountable, and six months to do it. Now the six months are up, and all Planned Parenthood clinics remain open in Missouri and tax dollars continue to flow to Planned Parenthood clinics across the state.

Senator Schaefer has recommended exactly nothing to hold Planned Parenthood accountable in Missouri. No proposals to cut Planned Parenthood’s funding. Nothing to end Planned Parenthood’s deceptive practices.

“Senator Schaefer has always played politics with abortion, campaigning as an effectively pro-choice candidate in his last two general elections,” said Attorney General candidate Josh Hawley. “This issue should not be about politics – it’s about saving lives and changing the law.”

The Schaefer Committee should have recommended the points below and Josh Hawley urges the legislature to act on them as soon as possible:

  • Stop Medicaid reimbursements in Missouri from flowing to any agencies that commit or promote abortions, or that refer patients to entities that commit abortions. Five states have already done it. Missouri should act now.
  • Bar any health organization chartered in the State of Missouri from distributing tax dollars, state or federal, to Planned Parenthood or any other outfit that performs abortions.
  • Replace Senator Schaefer with someone serious about holding Planned Parenthood accountable.

The Schaefer Committee has not done its job and Missouri cannot wait any longer.
