JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Senate heard from gubernatorial appointments with little debate or argument about the governor’s installments Wednesday.
Leadership from the chamber listened to more than 30 appointed people, each represented by a senator. Senators offered advice and asked questions about how their service would affect what they did in their capacity as members of executive boards.
Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Glendale, asked Leland Shurin, who may be appointed to the Kansas City Board of Police Commissioners how he would help to reduce crime.
“To me, crime and poverty are interwoven but are some significant challenges where we’re at right now,” Schmitt told Shurin. “You’re going on a board that’s going to have some impact on that.”
Most of the appointees got through with little debate, argument or rebuke. Infact, John Briscoe’s hearing as an appointee to the Missouri State Highways and Transportation Committee served as an impromptu hearing on funding for roads and bridges.
