Senate Tip Sheet: 30 Days After Primary

senate tip sheet

COMPETITIVE – 1

SD 19 (D+0.7) OPEN – Schaefer COMPETITIVE

This race will be the second most competitive in the entire state after the gubernatorial contest. Rep. Caleb Rowden is an excellent campaigner and can push a message of his being in the majority party where he can keep Mizzou safe from a legislature eager to wield a budget ax. Rep. Stephen Webber, as he highlighted in his opening commercial, will run on his military record and support for more liberal causes. It’s possible that this could be a district where Trump proves to be a drag, and it will be interesting to see how the incumbent Sen. Kurt Schaefer factors in.

LEAN REPUBLICAN  0

LEAN DEMOCRAT – 1

SD 1 (D+5.1) – Sifton LEAN DEMOCRAT

This is the second most contested Senate race in the state, mostly because the Democrats weren’t able to field top notch candidates against Sen. Gary Romine, Sen. Ryan Silvey, or in the 23rd or 21st Districts. Dr. Randy Jotte will do everything that he needs to do to win, and Senate Republicans will provide all the necessary money he needs to be competitive. It’s possible that all of the things Trump says that CNN and the New York Times hate are actually popular in South County. Republicans are counting on a big Trump win and a candidate with no record to make a run at the Senate floor’s most skilled operator. Also, don’t forget that this district is actually a more Democratic one than when Sen. Scott Sifton won as a challenger in 2012.

LIKELY REPUBLICAN – 3

SD 17 (R+0.8) – Silvey SAFE REPUBLICAN

This is a race that should have been right there with SD 19 as one of the hottest in the state, except for the fact that Sen. Ryan Silvey is an immensely popular public official. He has bridged the gap in Clay County and will be the last Republican who wins and holds this seat as easily as he has. His opponent may be kicked off the ballot, but most doubt it. Either way the real questions may be how much of his massive war chest does he come out of the race with and does the Humphreys family annoy him anymore with contributions sent to his opponent.

SD 15 (R+9.3) OPEN – Schmitt SAFE REPUBLICAN

You will recognize the name Eagleton and it’s who you think it is, therefore potentially making this a race to watch. However, Stephen Eagleton just barely won his primary, and lost the Democratic primary eight years ago. Eagleton has the ability to make this a race, but look for Rep. Andrew Koenig to continue his unprecedented ground game that has won upset wins in the past. This time he hits the doors as the favorite in a district that was redistricted to be even more Republican than it was in 2008.

SD 23 (R+3.3) OPEN – Dempsey SAFE REPUBLICAN

Bill Eigel has been impressing with his initial forays into the business and political community. It will take a game changer to make this a competitive race. While the district may be changing, Eigel seems to have things well in hand.

LIKELY DEMOCRAT – 1

SD11 (D+8.9) OPEN – LeVota LIKELY DEMOCRAT

This will be an interesting race only if a mega donor, such as the Humphreys family, decides to come in to the tune of around a million dollars. Rep. John Rizzo won a tough primary with a comfortable margin where he overcame many of the attacks a general election opponent might hurl at him. Former Rep. Brent Lasater was able to door knock his way to a win in 2010, but this district might be out of reach for any Republican not named Noel Torpey, especially in a presidential year. Something will have to change to keep this race from being moved to a safe Democrat race.
