Capitol Profile: Kristian Starner

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The petite, clever, and always helpful Kristian Starner joined Brent Hemphill & Associates in December of 2008. She calls her first experience in governmental relations “baptism by fire.” She formerly worked in sales in Kansas City and advertising in Australia, but she said she felt she needed a challenge.

Starner’s brother-in-law and put her in contact with Jay Reichard, who tipped her off to Brent Hemphill. She says “the rest is history.”

“One of the things I like most about my job is that it is perfect for someone who enjoys learning about a plethora of subjects and interacting with a variety of people; I tend to bore easily, however, this job is the antithesis of dull,” Starner said. “The fast-paced environment of session ensures that every day I wake up I never know what to expect or what the day will bring. I like the idea of taking a concept and turning it into something real and meaningful for everyday citizens.”

Hemphill & Associates has a broad range of clients, ranging from healthcare and telecommunications to agriculture and education. She said that education is one issue that truly stands out for her and that she enjoys engaging on.

“I would say education is the issue I am most passionate about and I enjoy engaging on topics such as the student transfer legislation and also virtual schools,” Starner said. “I recently started working on the TeachGreat initiative which will be on the November ballot.”

Starner says that the passage of oral chemotherapy parity this past session was one of the most gratifying of her career with Hemphill & Associates.

“I enjoy working with Brent because he always pushes me to try my best and to constantly expand my knowledge of topics that are pertinent to our clients” she said. “I also love that I have an enormous sense of autonomy in my job.”

Outside of session, she enjoys the flexible work schedule which allows her to pursue travel and spend time with her close family. Starner enjoys shopping at antique and flea markets, sewing, and riding her bike. Those who have connected with her outside of the Capitol know her passion and talent for yoga.
