Rep. Gail McCann-Beatty of Kansas City will remain on as Assistant Minority Floor Leader and Rep. John Rizzo (D-Kansas City) is staying on as Whip. Rep. John Carpenter (D-Gladstone), another Kansas City-area Democrat and a rising star within the party, was elected Caucus Vice Chair.

The election of caucus chair was tabled until later today after at least very close vote, while Rep. Karla May (D-St. Louis) was narrowly elected to serve as caucus secretary. For a small caucus, the voting was close and at time contentious, sources told The Missouri Times.

After several close votes for caucus chair, Rep. Gina Mitten (D-St. Louis) was elected to the position.

Democrats are facing a historically massive Republican supermajority in the coming general assembly. Republicans will head into January’s session with 118 members compared to only 45 Democrats.
