Americans for Prosperity sends letter to lawmakers on Right to Work

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Americans for Prosperity (AFP), a conservative grassroots organization, released a letter at noon today urging Missouri lawmakers to vote in favor of Right to Work legislation.

The letter, which is signed by 55 different organizations and can be read in full here, details the economic impact statistics that right to work legislation has had on the 25 states that have adopted such measures.

“Right to Work states outperform their forced-union counterparts,” the letter says. “According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, Right to Work states have experienced greater job growth, population growth, and compensation growth over every significant measured amount of time.”

AFP-Missouri state director Patrick Werner also called for members of the General Assembly to vote in favor of Right to Work.

“We’re hopeful Missouri lawmakers will follow their lead and embrace a policy that grows personal incomes, boosts job creation and provides for a more vibrant, competitive state economy,” he said in a statement. “It’s important to recognize that parts of our state are really struggling and are looking to their state officials to adopt policy solutions that will help them create jobs and grow their communities.”

Gov. Jay Nixon vetoed HB 116 and 589 early in June which would have effectively made Missouri the 26th state in the country to become Right to Work states. Nixon and other opponents of the bills note that Right to Work’s ability to limit the power of unions and their collective bargaining powers are reason enough to oppose the legislation.

House and Senate Republicans in Missouri will attempt to overrule the governor’s veto in the upcoming veto session.
