St. Louis — Former House Speaker Catherine Hanaway announced her “first coalition” yesterday for her campaign for governor emphasizing the support she has from Missouri’s farmers.

“Agriculture is the backbone of Missouri’s economy,” Hanaway said in a statement. “As Governor, I will promote our agribusiness strength to the nation and the world, and I will fight to preserve our Midwestern, rural way of life. I will work tirelessly to make Missouri the number one agribusiness state in the nation. I will stand up for Missouri against the federal government and its overly intrusive regulators. The Department of Natural Resources will no longer be an enforcement agency and echo chamber for the EPA.”

Hanaway announced a steering committee for her “Farm Families for Hanaway” coalition that includes the chairs of House and Senate agriculture committees: Rep. Bill Reiboldt and Sen. Brian Munzlinger.

Hanaway has been in the race far longer than most of her opponents, and like many of the candidates in the field, does not hail from a rural part of the state, making Missouri’s farmers one of the key demographics to winning a Republican primary for governor.
