Former Sec. of Labor Reich visits mid-Missouri

ARMSTRONG, Mo. – Famed liberal economist and political commentator Robert Reich visited central Missouri Saturday to promote his new book, Saving Capitalism: For the Many, Not the Few, and two Democratic Columbia representatives had an opportunity to attend.

Reps. Kip Kendrick and Stephen Webber attended Reich’s event at a farm near Armstrong, Missouri, half an hour north of Boonville, to listen to President Bill Clinton’s former Secretary of Labor.

While the figures involved definitely leaned to the left, Kendrick believes that Reich’s advocacy to change the state of capitalism in the United States by favoring the middle class speaks to Americans, regardless of personal political beliefs.

“His message resonates well with the whole political spectrum,” Kendrick said. “His message is Wall Street banks have gotten bigger in recent years… the general public’s concern about power and money being concentrated in just a few hands and the general struggle of the middle class to make ends meet. I think his message needs to be heard whether or not everyone needs to agree with his approach to it. it’s important to hear what he has to say.”

Reich also spoke about corporate control of agriculture, overturning Citizens United, and combating income inequality. He also brought along a video crew to film for part of a future documentary. Kendrick said it was interesting to watch them work.

“It was fun to see them try to capture the moment,” Kendrick said.
