O’FALLON, Mo. – Nick Schroer, an O’Fallon attorney, created his campaign committee Dec. 30, 2015 to replace Rep. Ron Hicks, R-St. Peters, and has hit the ground running.
“It’s something that I’ve always had in the back of my mind,” Schroer said of his desire to hold office. “Everything has happened really fast. I can’t complain, I love it. What makes it a little more hectic is that I’m in court often. When I’m not in court, I’ve worked on the campaign. I’m anxious to get out and talk to people.”
The candidate works at Boehmer Law, LLC, located in St. Charles, where he primarily specializes in family law, but he also practices criminal law and personal injury cases. While in law school at Southern Illinois – Carbondale, Schroer was president of both the Law School Republicans and Federalist Society.
Schroer said he comes from a politically polarized family, which led him to seek out and research politics.
“Like family law, there is a lot of drama in politics,” said Schroer. Schroer sought to bring in speakers from both sides of the aisle while he was in collegiate organizational leadership.
“I wanted to be a voice for the people,” he said. “I want to do the legwork and there are many issues I’m going to have to educate myself on that impact tons of families on either side. I have to talk to my constituents and figure out what is best for them and why they feel a certain way.”
Schroer is adamently pro-life, as he was born and raised within the Catholic Church.
“I am an advocate for my clients and will be an advocate for my constituents,” Schroer said. “I’m going to fight for what my client wants, as I am an advocate for my clients. I’m going to do the same for my constituents. This is my first time running. When I talk to them and they ask me my positions, I tell them, ‘I’ll tell you, but more importantly, I want to know how you feel.’ I want to be an advocate for what District 107 wants.”
Schroer is married with one daughter. His wife, Katherine, is finishing up her clinicals to become a nurse practitioner. His daughter, Delaney, is spending her entrance into toddler-dom performing check ups on baby dolls with Doc McStuffins.
“That really pushes me into running, protecting my family,” Schroer said. “Protection of family, parents having a voice in their children’s education – these concerns are really pressing for parents.”
Hicks, who Schroer said he’s talked at length with regarding the district, will not be running for re-election, instead running for mayor of St. Peters.
