Cost-share program starts accepting applications

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Applications for the Missouri Moves transportation cost-share program opened today and will remain open through July 29, the Department of Transportation announced today.

The legislature appropriated $20 million for the program from general revenue during the 2016 session. From that money, MoDOT can participate in up to 50 percent of the costs for projects.

Projects eligible for Missouri Moves include roads, bridges and multi-modal facilities. MoDOT says projects will be selected based on:

  • Project Category: Safety, Preservation (Taking Care of the System) and System Expansion
  • State System project
  • Applicant’s level of participation
  • Applicant’s source of matching funds; and
  • Current project status (ready to advertise for construction bids, design plans in place, etc.)

The Missouri Moves projects will allow counties and municipalities with pending projects to move up the dates if they pay for at least half of the project’s cost.

No more than 25 percent of the annual general revenue appropriation can be distributed to any one district, unless insufficient applications are received, according to MoDOT.

The Missouri Moves program was one way the General Assembly attempted to address the state’s aging infrastructure, but the funds will need to be reappropriated every year.

A solution that would have allowed voters to raise the gas tax 5.9 cents for the purposes of highway funding failed to reach the House floor.
