How does Missouri rank in patriotism?

How patriotic is Missouri? According to a recent study by WalletHub, the Show Me State ranks 19th in the country.

The WalletHub methodology ranks the states’ military engagement and civic engagement to create the overall rankings. Missouri ranked 23rd in military engagement and 19th in civic engagement, according to the study.

Virginia came in first, thanks to high scores in both military and civic engagement while New Jersey finished dead last with a 50th ranking in military engagement.

Missouri beat out all of its neighboring states, topping Kansas (21), Nebraska (23), Oklahoma (24), Kentucky (27), Iowa (31), Tennessee (33), Arkansas (40) and Illinois (46).

To rank the states, WalletHub created a military engagement score and a civic engagement score, each of which totaled 50.

About half of the military engagement was made up of percentage of residents who enlisted in the military in 2014. It also weighed the number of veterans per 1,000 residents, the number of active-duty military personnel per 100,000 residents, and the percentage of people in military reserves.

Civic engagement encompassed percentage of residents who voted in the 2012 presidential election, percentage of people that voted in the 2016 primary elections, volunteer rate, volunteer hours per resident, number of Americorps volunteers per 100,000 residents, number of Peace Corps volunteers per 100,000 residents, frequency of Google searches for american flags, civics-education requirement.

Of course, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a civics requirement just last week, so if the study was done a year from now, the state’s standing could be improved, possibly into the top ten.
