Statewide offices to be audited in anticipation of transitions

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – While statewide elected officials cling to their last days in office, trying to avoid lame duck status, the auditor’s office will begin preparing for fresh blood in those offices.

State Auditor Nicole Galloway announced Thursday that her office will begin closeout audits of the governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general and treasurer, all of which will see someone new in charge come January.

“As State Auditor, it’s my job to hold all levels of government accountable for their use of taxpayer dollars,” Auditor Galloway said. “I look forward to sharing our findings for each of these offices with the public once the audits are completed next year.”

The closeout audits aim to assist in transitions and to make incoming officials aware of areas for improvement. The audits will begin this summer and end in early 2017, going through the officials last days in office.

All of the offices have been previously audited in the last couple of years. Most recently, the treasurer’s office received an “excellent” rating in April while the secretary of state received a “good” rating. Also receiving “good” ratings was the lieutenant governor’s office in 2013.

The attorney general’s office and the governor’s office were both audited in 2015 and received “fair” ratings.
