Top National Guard general receives prestigious Missourian Award

BRANSON, Mo. – Missouri National Guard Adjutant General Steve Danner received a Missouri Award Sept. 24.

Danner first enlisted with the Army in 1972 during the Vietnam War, and he has served in the Missouri National Guard since 1981, which included a two-year stint in Iraq from 2005-2007. He has been Missouri’s Adjutant General since 2009 where he has overseen mobilizations and responded to state emergency missions.

“I am honored Gov. Jay Nixon nominated me for the Missourian Award, which has been presented to dozens of notable Missourians during its history,” Danner said after receiving the award. “I was proud to stand in the company of recipients who have dedicated their lives to contributing to our great state and nation.”

The award is given to a person born in the state of Missouri who has contributed to either the state or nation in the fields of arts, politics, civics, or business. A full public list of the recipients is expected to be available in the coming weeks.

Other military leaders in the past that have received the award include Five-Star Gen. Omar Bradley, Gen. John Pershing, and President Harry S Truman, who served as a captain in the Missouri National Guard.

Last year’s winners included Anne Marie Baker, president of UMB Bank; Bob Hammerschmidt, president of Commerce Bank; and Dr. Sue Head, vice president for cultural affairs and dean of character education at the College of the Ozarks, among others.

Former University of Missouri System President Tim Wolfe also received one of last year’s awards before the Concerned Student 1950 protests gained prominence.
