The association said Jungmann received the honor in part because of his focus on closing opportunity gaps within his school system. They said he engaged with numerous stakeholders over a process that lead to the system’s current strategic plan.

“John Jungmann is one of the go-to educational leaders both in Missouri and beyond. Dr. Jungmann is committed to providing outstanding educational opportunities for the students of his district and he has made a priority of effectively collaborating with staff, parents and community members to assure high quality education for all students.”

MASA also credited Jungmann with leadership on Imagine SPS, an initiative which challenged Springfield parents, students, business leaders and school personnel to make learning more engaging, relevant and personal.

Jungmann said he was accepting the award on behalf of the students and teachers in his district.

“I am honored to accept this award as recognition of the innovative work being done at SPS and would like to acknowledge the support of more than 4,000 SPS employees who work each day to make learning more engaging, relevant and personal for our 25,000 students,” he said.

The association also said Jungmann worked as an advocate for public education by his involvement in educational organizations, including MASA and the American Association of School Administrators. They said he actively advocates for quality public education to organizations and associations throughout the region, state and nation.

Jungmann became superintendent of Springfield Public Schools in 2014. With his selection as state superintendent of the year, he’s eligible to receive the national award, which will be handed out in March.
