JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The special House committee tasked with investigating the criminal allegations against the Republican Gov. Eric Greitens is extending its deadline.
Speaking with reporters on Monday afternoon, Rep. Gina Mitten, one of the two Democrats on the committee, said that the committee’s new deadline would be May 18, saying that the decision had been made in the previous week.
The committee’s deadline had been set for the past weekend, but Rep. Jay Barnes, who chairs the House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight, confirmed in a statement issued last Thursday that the committee report would be issued in the following week.
“When the committee finalizes its report, we will release it to the public,” House Speaker Todd Richardson said.
The Missouri House voted unanimously in March to establish the committee to investigate the allegations against Greitens, which could be considered the first steps toward possible impeachment proceedings.
But the resolution passed by the committee in March also stated that committee must report back to the House within 40 days, “except that the committee may approve extensions of such time limit for specified numbers of days.”
Following Mitten’s comment, Barnes released a statement:
“Nothing has changed. The committee will release a report this week,” he said. “The committee will also continue working through the end of session.”
