President Donald Trump is set to visit Missouri on Friday where is he joining U.S. Senate candidate Josh Hawley for a campaign rally.
The event will take place in Springfield, Missouri, at the JQH Arena on the Missouri State University campus. Doors open at 4 p.m. for general admission and the rally starts at 6:30 p.m.
This will be the third rally in which Trump has campaigned for Hawley this year — events have previously been held in Kansas City and St. Louis. A previously scheduled campaign event in Cape Girardeau was canceled due to the hurricane on the East Coast.
Trump is expected to use the rally as an opportunity to urge Missourians to replace incumbent-U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill with Hawley and to help protect the GOP majorities in Congress.
McCaskill is among 10 Senate Democrats up for re-election this year in states where Trump won — he won Missouri by nearly 20 percentage points in 2016. McCaskill is considered among the most vulnerable incumbents and is a target for Republicans seeking to expand their 51-49 majority in the U.S. Senate.
After news broke of the campaign rally, Missouri State University put out a statement noting this will delight some members of the community and offend others.
“We lease JQH Arena to individuals, organizations and corporations on a non-discriminatory basis. We cannot make decisions on who can and cannot rent university facilities based on personal beliefs or opinions,” the university stated.
Protests are already planned for the campaign rally. One group plans to wear plaid shirts, in reference to a young man in a plaid shirt who was asked to leave a Trump rally by the Secret Service. A larger demonstration has also been organized by the Missouri State University College Democrats.
