DNR Director Carol Comer reveals cancer diagnosis

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The head of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is optimistic as she is set to undergo treatment for cancer, noting she has “every confidence in a complete recovery.”

Carol Comer publicly revealed earlier this week she has cancer and will be undergoing chemotherapy and other treatments in the coming weeks.

But despite the cancer diagnosis, she’s remained committed to her work — and predicts that will continue.

“I feel good. I’m in the office full time, and I anticipate that will continue for the most part through treatment,” Comer told The Missouri Times. “I have an amazing staff who are ensuring that everything is taken care of at the Department of Natural Resources during my periodic absences.”

Comer also praised those in the Governor’s Office, other Cabinet officials, and colleagues for offering prayers and help during this time.

“I am being well cared for, and I have every confidence in a complete recovery,” she said.

Comer, who has led the state agency since 2017, said she told her staff in May that she had been “undergoing diagnostic tests for several weeks.” Aside from surgery, Comer said she will also have further treatment, including multiple rounds of radiation and chemotherapy.

Earlier this week, Comer held a meeting with the Missouri Division of Energy as it prepares to move under the DNR umbrella and attended a bill signing related to her department.

Before coming to Missouri, Comer worked in Indiana’s Department of Environment Management in a variety of capacities, serving under then-Gov. Mike Pence. As a lawyer, she has represented companies regarding environmental and utility matters in Indiana and Arizona.

She was appointed to the DNR by former Gov. Eric Greitens.
