Letter to the Editor: For students with adverse circumstances, virtual schooling is key to success

Our daughter has a unique set of allergies that make going to a brick-and-mortar school extremely difficult for her. As such, when she was attending her public school, the school continued to put her at risk and caused our daughter to not only be unsafe but anxious about the actual process of learning.

As a parent, this can break your heart, but it also toughens your resolve to find solutions that work best for your child and family. That’s when we found the option to enroll our daughter in the Missouri Virtual Academy (MOVA).

We’ve mitigated the risks to our daughter’s health, and now she has been able to excel in her classes. She went from being able to only write simple sentences to writing essays with ease.

She’s also doing better than most students her age in her prior school, thanks to MOVA.

Between the health of our daughter, and the freedom to learn from home, our daughter has excelled in ways we never thought possible when she was going to her public school.

I believe in the power of MOVA so much I started a Facebook group with the help of another mom that now has more than 200 parents. Our goal is to support MOVA families and educate others about the benefits of MOVA.

My family plans on keeping our daughter in MOVA indefinitely. As a parent who has seen firsthand the benefits of full-time public virtual education, I am encouraging the Missouri Legislature to fix MOCAP and enfranchise and educate all parents so that our next generation of students is successful.
