After Governor stays execution, death penalty film screens across Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Lindy Lou never had a problem with the death penalty, then the woman from rural Mississippi sat on a jury which handed down a death sentence to a man convicted in a double homicide. Twenty years later, in a new documentary film called Lindy Lou, Juror Number 2, Lou travels through Mississippi to interview the 11 jurors she served with on that trial. By following Lindy on this journey, the film takes a nuanced look at the issue of capital punishment and the impact it has on jurors.

The film will show on Thursday, August 31 at 7 p.m. at Capitol City Cinema on High St. by Cork. Missourians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and Equal Justice USA will host the screenings. Additional screenings will be held throughout the state.

Organizers hope the screenings spark conversations about the death penalty, its consequences on the jurors involved, and the problems in the system behind this brutal attempt at justice. This discussion is especially relevant in the wake of the stayed execution of Marcellus Williams, who came within four hours of being executed before Governor Greitens intervened.

“Missourians are fortunate to have a Governor that stands against our broken justice system,” Les Masters, who serves as the mid-Missouri coordinator for Missouri Conservatives Concerned about the Death Penalty, said. “The death penalty puts innocent lives at risk and denies victims the restitution they deserve.”

A discussion and question and answer period with local experts will follow screenings. Lou also will join audiences at some of the screenings to share more of her story. Good Pitch Local is an initiative devised by Doc Society.

All screenings are free and open to the public. Seating will be given on a first come, first served basis.
