HDCC amendment shows $47,000 difference from April report

ST. LOUIS — Amended returns delivered to the Missouri Ethics Commission this morning on behalf of the House Democratic Campaign Committee show the Committee has about $47,000 less cash on hand than was reported in April.

The amendment filed today hasn’t been updated on the MEC’s site, but removing the deficit from April’s just more than $49,000 cash on hand report could leave the Committee with slightly over $2,000.

Rep. Jeremy LaFaver, D-Kansas City, told The Missouri Times that accounts and ethics reports have been internally audited — with the MEC involved during the entire process — since the mistake was found.

LaFaver, a freshman, was elected to be the Chairman of the new House Democratic Victory Committee, a separate fundraising committee. He said that he and a few other legislators have been working to help fix the HDCC financial mistake.

The audit, LaFaver said, revealed that the old committee had “sloppy accounting mistakes” over the course of multiple reports, causing the difference in reported cash on hand versus what the Committee actually had.

“I think the important thing for folks to know is that the new structure that is in place is extremely well organized and on solid ground moving forward,” he said. The newly formed Victory Committee reported just less than $5,000 in April.

Update: Jody Murphy, who was previously responsible for the HDCC finances no longer works in Missouri. According to his LinkenIn profile and multiple articles attributed to him, he’s now the Executive Director at Virginia House Democratic Caucus.
