House Special Investigative Committee files civil suit against A New Missouri, Greitens for Missouri

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The House Special Investigative Committee on Oversight wants their subpoenas enforced, and to make it happen, the committee has now filed a civil suit against the dark money groups A New Missouri and Greitens for Missouri.

In the lawsuit filed on behalf of the Missouri House of Representatives by Mark Kempton, the committee asked the court to enforce the subpoenas that had been issued by House Speaker Todd Richardson, and compel both groups to produce the documents the committee had requested or show cause as to why they shouldn’t comply with the subpoenas.

The committee issued two subpoenas on May 3 for the two groups, but on May 9, both groups refused to comply with the subpoenas.

According to committee chairman Rep. Jay Barnes, Catherine Hanaway, a former House Speaker and U.S. attorney, a now-turned lawyer for Greitens for Missouri, has reportedly objected to turning over large amounts of documents to the committee.

Judge Jon Beetem has been assigned to the case, and the committee asks that he enforce the subpoenas, but no proceedings have been scheduled at this time.

Later in the day, Hanaway responded to the civil suit, saying:

“We can’t wait to stand in front of a judge and explain that in just seven days we produced more than 14,000 responsive documents, we are producing almost 6,000 documents today and the House still isn’t satisfied. We can’t wait to have a judge determine whether the House committee has the legal authority to go on a wild fishing expedition.”
