Lt. Gov. Parson calls for independent investigation of St. Louis Veterans Home, citing lack of faith in Missouri Veterans Commission

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Just days after Governor Eric Greitens penned a trite letter to Missouri’s U.S. Senators, Lt. Gov. Mike Parson has also penned a letter to Missouri Veterans Commission members about necessary investigations into the St. Louis Veterans Home.

The Lt. Gov. on Friday sent the letter to commissioners, saying he felt he should make them “aware that the Lieutenant Governor’s Office has been conducting its own investigation into the allegations since February of this year.”

“We have conducted numerous interviews with family members, doctors, and past and current employees,” Parson wrote.

He said that, as a U.S. Army veteran and a former investigative officer, it was clear to him that the St. Louis Veterans has serious problems, and said that an “exhaustive and independent investigation outside the Missouri Veterans Commission” should begin as soon as possible.

“I know the difference between those who are trying to obstruct and those who are trying to help, and I see a great deal of the former happening now at the Missouri Veterans Commission,” he wrote.

Parson also addressed the claims of Deputy Director of the Missouri Veterans Commission Brian Hunt, who alleged a “racist agenda.”

Parson recommends independent investigation into St. Louis Missouri Veterans Home

“To have a Deputy Director of a state agency allege a “racist agenda” by family members of residents and former employees of the St. Louis Veterans Home is an asinine and disgraceful statement,” Parson wrote. “Had the Commission paid attention to the allegations, they would see race has no place in them. This is a perfect example of bureaucracy at its worst – to focus more on saving their own careers than taking care of Missouri veterans.”

Parson finished by saying the number one concern here should be the quality care of veterans, and that his office will continue to listen to anyone who has information about the allegations.
