KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt announced today that his office has secured the first federal indictment in the Kansas City area through the Safer Streets Initiative. Assistant Attorneys General from the Attorney General’s Office were deputized as Special Assistant U.S. Attorneys (SAUSA) in the Western district of the state in late August.
On October 2, 2019, a federal grand jury indicted Nathan W. Jarrett with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a previously convicted felon. The indictment alleges that on July 14, 2019, Independence Police Officers located two firearms in Jarrett’s possession. Jarrett had previously been convicted of one or more crimes punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year. Caleb Aponte is the SAUSA handling this case.
“Missourians should rest assured that the Attorney General’s Office is working daily to tackle violent crime across the state. I look forward to continuing to work with our local and federal partners to make Missouri a safer place,” said Attorney General Schmitt.
Attorney General Schmitt and U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Jeff Jensen launched the Safer Streets Initiative in St. Louis in January. The initiative was then expanded in conjunction with U.S. Attorney for the Western District Timothy Garrison to include Kansas City and Springfield.
All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty. Criminal charges are not evidence of a crime.
