JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – In his first seven months in office, Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and the Consumer Protection Section of the Missouri Attorney General’s Office secured over $13 million in judgments and settlements for the state of Missouri and Missourians. The amount obtained in judgments and settlements in the first seven months of 2019 has surpassed the total amount obtained in 2018. Multistate settlements like the Equifax settlement and the Fiat Chrysler emissions settlement, as well as restitution from fraudulent contractors and other sources contribute to the $13 million figure.
“Since I was sworn in as Missouri’s 43rd Attorney General in January, one of my top priorities has been protecting and advocating for Missouri consumers. The dedicated attorneys in the Consumer Protection Section have worked tirelessly to ensure that scammers and bad actors have been held accountable. Because of their hard work, my office has obtained more than $13 million in judgments and settlements in the first seven months of 2019, eclipsing the previous year’s total amounts,” said Attorney General Schmitt. “We will continue to move forward in our mission to protect Missouri consumers and hold scammers and companies accountable for their actions.”
Since January, when Attorney General Schmitt entered office, and through the end of July, the Consumer Protection Section has obtained more than $13.3 million in judgments and settlements, eclipsing the total amount obtained in all of 2018, which was nearly $12 million.
Major settlements, such as the settlement with Equifax over their data breach, the settlement with Johnson and Johnson (Depuy) over faulty hip implants, and the settlement with Fiat Chrysler over emissions scandals, contributed largely to the $13 million figure.
In addition to the $13 million in judgments and settlements, the Attorney General’s Office has secured more than $7 million in restitution for Missouri consumers through its consumer advocate mediation efforts since January of 2019.
