Nasheed gets results: HUD listens, makes efforts to improve Clinton-Peabody housing complex

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Sen. Jamilah Nasheed put out a call, and the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development answered.

Last September, the senator from the 5th district sent a letter to HUD requesting immediate inspections and remediation to address what she described as “unacceptable living conditions at the Clinton-Peabody Housing Complex in St. Louis.

Nasheed and local leaders also held a town hall meeting last fall at the Clinton-Peabody.

In response to Nasheed’s letter, HUD detailed more than $185,000 worth of repairs and remediation efforts to address issues of rodent infestation, sewer repairs, and ventilation issues.

“The living conditions at Clinton-Peabody were deplorable, and I am glad that HUD listened to us, got to work and made real improvements for the people that live there,” Nasheed said in a statement. “I appreciate the help of Sen. McCaskill, and local leaders like State Representatives Butler and Franks, in bring attention to this issue. There is still work to be done, and we will continue to hold agencies accountable s that the individuals and families at Clinton-Peabody are never forgotten.”

The letter also noted that at least $250,000 worth of work is still needed, but no funding has been identified to meet that need at this time.
