Nixon holds annual tree decorating ceremony

KidsJEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – With a flock of 41 first-graders from Belair Elementary at their feet, Gov. Jay Nixon and First Lady Georganne Nixon held their annual Capitol Christmas tree decorating ceremony Tuesday just outside the governor’s office.

After a speech in which Nixon declared December Christmas Tree Month in the state of Missouri, students lined up to help the First Family hang personally-made ornaments on the 12-foot tall tree.

This year, the tree came from the family owned Meert Tree Farm in Festus.

Nixon used the opportunity to praise the Christmas tree industry in Missouri, highlighting its essential part in the state’s agricultural economy while also celebrating the symbolic, sentimental and faith-informed nature of the pines.
