Poll: Dooley Campaign in Serious Peril

Kansas City, MO – Remington Research Group has conducted a second independent survey of the Democratic Primary for St. Louis County Executive between incumbent Charlie Dooley and challenger Steve Stenger.

The new numbers for the County Executive’s race shows Steve Stenger leading Charlie Dooley by 15 points. Stenger has 50% of the vote, to 35% for Dooley while 12% are undecided. The third candidate, Ronald Levy remains a non-factor at 3%.

A racial divide separates the two leading candidates. Stenger picked up 62% of white voters who were surveyed, compared to only 24% for Dooley. Conversely, Dooley attracted 59% of African-American voters who were surveyed, compared to only 26% for Stenger.

Charlie Dooley has recently launched an aggressive television campaign against the challenger Steve Stenger. Likely Democrats were asked if the latest television commercials had an effect on who they would support. A majority of St. Louis County Democrats, 63%, responded that Dooley’s latest commercials have not caused them to support the incumbent.

The survey asked voters as to their opinion of both candidates. Dooley has 33% favorability, with 45% unfavorability. The challenger, Steve Stenger, is viewed much more favorably. Stenger has 46% favorability, with 26% unfavorability.

“Compared to our last survey, Dooley’s support remains static. The incumbent’s messages against Steve Stenger are not gaining any traction. Charlie Dooley’s political life is at a code blue. It is critical that he shake things up in the next five days or he will be politically flatlined,” said Titus Bond of Remington Research Group.

This is the second survey conducted by Remington Research Group for this race. The first, conducted July 9th through July 16th, showed Stenger leading Dooley by 13 points with 22% undecided. In that survey Stenger attracted 45% of the vote compared to 32% for Dooley.

Remington Research Group conducted a survey of 2,396 Likely Democrat voters July 24th through July 27th. Responses were weighted to reflect turnout demographics in St. Louis County. The effective sample size for the survey is 1,697 and the margin of error is +/- 3%. The survey was commissioned independent of any campaign or committee involved in the race. The survey combined automated polling with live surveys.
