Gov. Nixon signs bill to make excavations and digging safer; House Bill 1867 is one of four bills signed today
JEFFERSON CITY – Gov. Jay Nixon today signed into law bipartisan legislation that updates and improves the Missouri One Call System to make excavation and digging safer by improving communication between the excavator and the underground facility owner.
House Bill 1867 requires all underground facility owners in Missouri to participate in the Missouri One Call System, so long as they own the facility. The Missouri One Call System, through 1-800-DIG-RITE and www.mo1call.com, provides a single point of contact for people to request the location of underground facilities, including utility lines, prior to excavation or digging.
Missouri One Call System Inc. operates as a non-profit Missouri corporation and includes a notification center 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The system allows utilities and excavators to comply with Missouri’s Underground Facility Safety and Damage Prevention statutes. As a state senator in 1991, Gov. Nixon sponsored legislation to put the Missouri One Call System into law.
In addition to House Bill 1867, the Governor today also signed:
n Senate Bill 809, which modifies provisions related to the licensure of architects, engineers, land surveyors and professional landscape architects;
n Senate Bill 818 which expands the allowable uses for Aviation Trust Fund moneys to include airport business plans and strategic plans at existing airports; and
n Senate Bill 842 limits the inspection of diesel fuel coloration only for tanks holding the fuel for wholesale or retail sale.
