Governor Nixon Appeals for Equality of Education but Details for Transfer Crisis Solution Lacking

Jefferson City, MO – StudentsFirst Missouri Outreach Director Ryan Stauffer today issued the following statement regarding Gov. Jay Nixon’s State of the State address delivered this evening:

“We are pleased that Governor Nixon highlighted the importance of a strong public education system for all of the Show-Me State’s children in tonight’s State of the State address. We all know that every child – regardless of zip code or demographic – has the capacity to perform at high levels. We urge the Governor to work with leaders in the General Assembly to prioritize reforms that empower parents to do what is best for their children and cultivate great teachers across the state. As the Governor said, ‘Education is the great equalizer. Because when every child has a quality education, every child has the opportunity to succeed.’

“While we agree with Governor Nixon’s sentiment that every child can succeed and that teachers play a vital role in students’ lives, families trapped in failing school districts still have no path to send their children to high-performing schools. Last year, a bipartisan group of legislators worked tirelessly to fix student transfers and the Governor vetoed their solution. Missouri families deserve to hear from the Governor what his proposal is.We urge the Governor to work with the legislature this year to put together a plan that ensures all students have access to a high quality school. StudentsFirst stands ready to assist.”
